Our client''s customer is a large multi-national company and they receive, process and dispatch items on their behalf. The multi-national customer requires photographic evidence of the condition of all goods at the time of receipt and again at dispatch. The photos must be available for online access within an hour of their movement.
Initially they tried capturing the pictures using digital cameras but there were two major problems. Firstly, with high volumes, it was difficult to associate pictures with obscure names like DSCF8354.jpg with an actual item. Secondly, the satff had then to associate the right picture with an identifying serial/shipment number. This process was error prone, time comsuming and costly.
We created some special web server software and an application to run on a standard Android tablet or large smartphone. To capture the required images and shipment ID staff could do this entirely on the warehouse floor by taking the photo then keying in the shipment number. As this could be done standing next to the item errors were eliminated Upload to the online server is direct so the end customer has immediate access to the information.
The application was operational within two weeks of us receiving the initial briefing and has since been extended to cover eight further customers. Once the shipment number format has been standardised the keying of the number can be replaced by scanning a QR code using the tablet/phone camera.
